Advancing Evidence, Accountability and Sustainable Development in Northern Ghana
The TAMA Foundation Universal Annual Report 2025 highlights a transformative year of research, community engagement, policy dialogue, institutional strengthening, and partnership building across Northern Ghana.
During 2025, TAMA Foundation continued to work with communities, civil society organisations, researchers, traditional authorities, government institutions, and development partners to address challenges relating to natural resource governance, environmental sustainability, water security, peacebuilding, livelihoods, governance and accountability, and gender equality and social inclusion.
Highlights from 2025
Generating evidence for better governance
TAMA Foundation, with support from STAR Ghana Foundation and in partnership with the CSIR-Water Research Institute, undertook a comprehensive assessment of water quality in selected sections of the Volta River Basin. The study examined 40 water samples from rivers, boreholes, and mining-affected communities and identified elevated levels of contamination associated with mining activities.
Understanding farmer-herder conflicts
With support from STAR Ghana Foundation and technical collaboration with the University for Development Studies, TAMA Foundation conducted a national review of farmer-herder conflicts. The review examined conflict drivers, governance challenges, policy gaps, and opportunities for strengthening peaceful coexistence.
Strengthening community accountability
The Foundation continued supporting Community Action Groups and Paralegal Structures in mining-affected communities. Their work included community monitoring, environmental reporting, awareness creation, citizen engagement, and advocacy for community rights.
Building stronger civil society
TAMA Foundation continued strengthening the Northern Ghana CSO Platform on Natural Resource Governance through training and collective action focused on environmental impact assessment processes, human rights and business, environmental accountability, collective advocacy, and strategic communication.
Preventing violent extremism
The Foundation trained 300 youth in Northern Ghana on drivers of violent extremism, recruitment mechanisms, and early warning systems for preventing violent extremism.
Creating spaces for dialogue
Community Accountability Forums brought together communities, traditional authorities, district assemblies, civil society organisations, and regulatory institutions to engage constructively on natural resource governance concerns, strengthen trust, and promote peaceful approaches to grievances.
Key Partners
The 2025 report acknowledges the contributions of partners and stakeholders including the Ford Foundation, STAR Ghana Foundation, CSIR-Water Research Institute, University for Development Studies, Environmental Protection Agency, Water Resources Commission, Forestry Commission, National Peace Council, civil society and community-based organisations, media partners, CHRAJ, District Assemblies, and Traditional Authorities.
Looking Ahead to 2026
Building on the gains made in 2025, TAMA Foundation Universal will focus on expanding community accountability initiatives, strengthening environmental governance systems, advancing policy engagement and advocacy, supporting conflict prevention, promoting climate resilience and environmental justice, strengthening research and evidence generation, and expanding strategic partnerships and resource mobilisation.
