Tamale, Ghana — 2026
TAMA Foundation Universal has published its 2025 Annual Report, documenting a year of research, community empowerment, stakeholder engagement, policy dialogue, institutional strengthening, and partnership building across Northern Ghana.
The report reflects a year in which the Foundation continued its efforts to promote inclusive and sustainable development through research, evidence generation, community participation, institutional strengthening, and policy engagement.
Generating evidence for action
One of the major achievements highlighted in the report was the Volta River Basin Water Quality Study, undertaken by TAMA Foundation with support from STAR Ghana Foundation and in partnership with the CSIR-Water Research Institute.
The study examined 40 water samples collected from rivers, boreholes, and mining-affected communities across multiple regions. Its findings identified elevated levels of contamination linked to mining activities and highlighted risks to public health, ecosystem sustainability, and water security. The research provided an important evidence base for advocacy and policy engagement.
Another major milestone was the National Review of Farmer-Herder Conflicts, conducted with support from STAR Ghana Foundation and technical collaboration with the University for Development Studies. The review examined conflict drivers, governance challenges, policy gaps, and opportunities for strengthening peaceful coexistence.
Strengthening communities and accountability
Throughout 2025, TAMA Foundation continued to support Community Action Groups and Paralegal Structures operating in mining-affected communities.
These structures contributed to community monitoring, environmental reporting, awareness creation, citizen engagement, and advocacy for community rights, helping to strengthen local accountability and participation.
The Foundation also continued strengthening the Northern Ghana CSO Platform on Natural Resource Governance through capacity development in areas including environmental impact assessment, human rights and business, environmental accountability, collective advocacy, and strategic communication.
Investing in peace and prevention
The report also highlights TAMA Foundation’s contribution to efforts aimed at preventing violent extremism.
During the year, the Foundation trained 300 youth in Northern Ghana on the drivers of violent extremism, recruitment mechanisms, and early warning systems.
Dialogue remained an important part of the Foundation’s approach. Community Accountability Forums created opportunities for communities, traditional authorities, district assemblies, civil society organisations, and regulatory institutions to engage on natural resource governance concerns and develop peaceful approaches to grievances.
Partnerships driving impact
TAMA Foundation acknowledges that the progress recorded in 2025 was made possible through collaboration with development partners, government institutions, research organisations, civil society, traditional authorities, communities, and other stakeholders.
The report specifically acknowledges partners including the Ford Foundation, STAR Ghana Foundation, CSIR-Water Research Institute, University for Development Studies, Environmental Protection Agency, Water Resources Commission, Forestry Commission, National Peace Council, CHRAJ, District Assemblies, Traditional Authorities, civil society organisations, community-based organisations, and media partners.
Looking ahead to 2026
Building on the progress made in 2025, TAMA Foundation Universal will focus on expanding community accountability initiatives, strengthening environmental governance, advancing policy engagement and advocacy, supporting conflict prevention, promoting climate resilience and environmental justice, strengthening research and evidence generation, and expanding strategic partnerships and resource mobilisation.
